The Ship of State

The boat he built in the desert
never left the dock. The champagne went flat
and the passengers—who gave millions
for this cruise into the future—
are stuck, hard aground.

“I am your Captain!”
he shouts from the bridge.

But the people have moved on
to the next dusty town…
someone new
has promised to build them a bigger boat.
